Chapter Twenty Three: Trying to Make the Best out of the Situation
It had been three weeks since the death of his mother and Khalil was doing his best to keep his family together. He didn’t have time to be all depressed and heartbroken; he had to do what he had to do for the sake of his family. He now had to officially carry his family on his back and he wasn’t going to let them down. Of course he still loved and grieved for his mother Yolanda but deep down he knows that his mother would’ve wanted him to watch over his younger siblings and make sure they were taken care of. And that’s what he’s going to do. Besides, Khalil had to deal with helping Phillip and Alisha get through this.
“Khai, can I sleep in here with you tonight?” little Alisha asked standing in the doorway holding her new stuffed teddy bear with her thumb in her mouth.
“Sure sweetie, come on,” Khai said, moving over.
Little Alisha climbed in alongside her brother.
“Khai, I’m scared that the monsters will get me,” she whined.
“Listen to me Alisha, as long as I’m alive and breathing nothing will happen to you. Your big brother got your back no matter the situation. It’s us three against the world, you understand?” Khalil asked.
“Yes. Khai I miss Mommy,” she replied.
“I do too princess. Now get some sleep because tomorrow it’s back to normal,” Khalil said.
It took about twenty minutes before little Alisha was out cold. Khalil looked down at her little innocent face and he couldn’t help but smile. Once she was asleep Khalil got up to get them and himself ready to get back into a normal routine. He made sure their book bags were by the door and their lunches were packed. Khalil then started catching up on his own school work that he has been slacking on lately. Ever since the death of his mother Khalil was even more determined to get his high school diploma. Then all of a sudden there was a knock on the door.
“Who is it?” he asked.
“It’s us bro,” Isiah yelled from the other side of the door.
Khalil walked over to open the door and there his boys and Natalie stood there with little Mason in her arms. The guys exchanged daps with one another. The one thing that Khalil loved about his boys is that when one of them was going through something they seemed to pull together. They even covered his shifts from time to time, and still gave him a percentage. They knew that he was trying to figure shit out.
“What y’all niggas up to?” he asked.
“Ain’t shit nigga. We were coming over to get you for the meeting,” Gino said.
“What meeting?” he asked confused.
“The meeting Vegas called,” Gino said.
“Oh damn, yeah I forgot all about that. My bad,” he replied.
“Its cool nigga. We know that you have things going on with the little ones and shit,” Isiah said.
“True, but now I need to pull together and get focused.
